Illustrator and Scratchboard

Technique of scratchboard: Depending on the intent of the artist, several areas may be cleared out for layering with watercolors, airbrush, ink, color pencils, or acrylics. The layers are then scratched off one by one to create different shades of color that blend into and highlight certain parts of the image.

Sgraffito art: is a technique either of wall decor, produced by applying layers of plaster tinted in contrasting colors to a moistened surface, or in ceramics, by applying to an unfired ceramic body two successive layers of contrasting slip, and then in either case scratching so as to produce an outline drawing.

The two techniques are similar because they both involve contrasting.
